Death and Life Are in the Power of the Tongue

One of the things I shared in my school of prayer, recently, was the danger of binding ourselves with our words. According to Proverbs 18:21, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue." Critical times can mean that if we are not careful, our response can be to speak negative words that bind us.

In 2011, I had an accident in London that caused me to have broken bones in my ankle. According to the doctors, it was a displaced fracture that was worse than other types of fractures. They said I needed surgery so I would not end up with a long-term disability. I refused surgery, but after a while, even after the fracture healed, I was unable to walk. Even my physiotherapist, in frustration, would wonder aloud why I was taking so long to walk. (Please note that I am not against surgery for those who choose to do it, but it was not my desire to have a surgery.)

During that critical time, I became discouraged due to my inability to walk. I could not travel to minister or go out on the streets to preach the Gospel. I needed to have friends who could spare the time to come and cook for me, and I could not do my usual power walking. My hobbies had a lot to do with the use of my legs, such as hiking, taking regular, long walks, and even going mountain climbing. Unable to do any of these things, in my discouragement, I would sometimes speak in faith that I would walk, while other times I would speak in doubt that I might never walk again.

A Powerful and Humbling Dream from the Lord

One night during that period, I slept and had a dream. In that dream, I saw my mum who had passed on to be with the Lord. My mother was someone who believed we should always walk by faith, and walked a lifestyle of faith herself.

In my dream, she expressed her concern about my leg and how I constantly spoke negative words about not getting better. She warned me gently that such behavior was not good for me. As she spoke, the Lord opened my eyes and I had a vision within my dream.

In that vision, I saw tiny, black demons that surrounded my hurt ankle. The demons spoke in a demonic language, repeatedly. The Lord then gave me the translation of what they spoke. They were saying "amen" repeatedly, every time I would confess that I would or might not be able to walk.

My negative words were inviting the "amen" of the demons. I was stunned as I realized that just as our positive words of prayer invite an amen for God to move, so our negative words invite an amen from demons to release destruction, terror and pain into our lives.

I woke up with a deep fear of the Lord and repented, determined never to speak words of death over my legs, only words of life. I put my faith into action and started attempting things I could not do before, as I determinedly continued to profess only God's words over my legs. A short while later, I was able to start walking and made quick progress. I even progressed to the point where I was taking regular long-distance walks again, which I continue to do today, several years after the accident. Because of the Lord's divine intervention, I did not have the long-term disability that the doctors had feared!

I realized that this is a life message for all of us. How many times do we speak negative words over our lives and situations? Sometimes some of us even joke when we have a headache, saying, "My head is killing me." Life and death are in our tongue. Demons understand this and are looking for legal doorways to oppress us through the word curses we speak against ourselves.

Usually, I am someone with a strong faith, but at that moment of great discouragement, where I felt so diminished in many ways, the enemy found a foothold through my words. It took the Lord bringing me that timely vision to awaken me from my errors so I could receive my healing.

What Are Your Words Inviting?

Be watchful, dear saints. Watch your words carefully and take a moment to ponder this in your hearts: Are your words inviting an amen that brings freedom and blessings from God? Or are you speaking words of death and doubt that are inviting the "amen" utterances of demons, who are declaring "so be it" to every negative word we say?

I encourage you to do what I did. If you are in the latter category, repent of your negative word utterances; break off the amen of demons over your life and destiny; speak God's words and blessings over your life; and take steps of faith to receive the miracles promised you.

Beloved, you are so loved!
